Mauao (Mount Maunganui)

The distinctive volcanic cone rising from the tip of the Mount Maunganui peninsula is Tauranga's most recognisable landmark and its best viewpoint. The summit track takes about 45 minutes and loops around the base of the mount before climbing steeply to the top — from there you can see the entire Bay of Plenty, the harbour, the city, and on clear days the distant cone of White Island steaming on the horizon.

The base walk around the foot of the mount is easier and takes about 30 minutes. At the bottom, Mauao Beach faces the open ocean with consistent surf, while the harbour side of the peninsula has calmer water and popular hot pools. Both beaches are well-patrolled in summer.

A story
In Maori legend, Mauao was a nameless mountain who fell in love with a mountain who did not return his affections. In his grief he asked the patupaiarehe (fairy people) to drag him into the sea before dawn. They nearly succeeded, but sunrise caught them before they could finish, and he was left standing alone at the sea's edge — forever gazing out at the ocean.
