When to Go

Tauranga has one of the sunniest and mildest climates in New Zealand, which is saying something. Summer (December to February) is the peak season — the beaches fill, the water warms, and the Wairoa River rafting is booked out. This is also when accommodation is most expensive and most in demand.

Autumn (March to May) is the best compromise: the weather remains warm, the crowds ease, and the kiwifruit harvest brings a certain agricultural bustle to the surrounding countryside. The bay is at its most active for fishing and dolphin watching.

Winter (June to August) is mild by New Zealand standards — temperatures rarely fall below 10°C and rainfall is moderate. The Mount Maunganui pools are pleasant even in winter and the city is noticeably quieter.

The Tauranga City Airshow runs every second year, usually in February or March.
