Tauranga

Bay of Plenty harbour city, backed by orchards and linked to the beach resort of Mount Maunganui.

Tauranga sits on a large sheltered harbour on the Bay of Plenty coast, with a mild, sunny climate and easy access to good beaches. The city has all the practical amenities you'd expect, while across the harbour the beach resort of Mount Maunganui — with its distinctive volcanic cone — draws surfers, swimmers, and families who come for both the ocean swells and the calmer harbour side.

The surrounding region is prime kiwifruit and citrus country, and you'll see orchards stretching across the coastal plain. Out on the horizon, White Island (Whakaari) trails a plume of steam — an active volcano visible from shore and historically reachable by tour boat, though access has been restricted since the 2019 eruption.

For the more active, Tauranga has boat charters for big-game fishing, dolphin watching, and snorkelling. Rafting the Wairoa River is one of the more dramatic white-water options in the North Island — but only when the dam upstream releases water, so plan accordingly.
