The Elms

Historic mission house and garden tracing early European-Māori contact in Tauranga.

The Elms is one of Tauranga’s most important historic places, centred on a 19th-century mission house and its garden near the harbour. The site tells a layered story of missionary life, Māori-European contact, conflict, and settlement in the Bay of Plenty.

It works best with time to take in the grounds as well as the house. Compared with Tauranga’s beaches and waterfront, The Elms is quieter and more reflective, but it gives the city a deeper past than the modern port-town surface suggests.
