Queen Elizabeth Park is the centrepiece — set aside an hour to wander. Pukaha (Mount Bruce) twenty minutes north is the proper half-day trip for anyone interested in native birds. The Aratoi gallery on the main street is small but well-curated and free. Time a visit for early March if you want to see the Golden Shears.
