University of Waikato

New Zealand's fifth-oldest university, on the Waikato River

The University of Waikato was founded in 1964 and has a main campus on the eastern bank of the Waikato River, about 2 km from the city centre. The campus itself is worth a walk — it is green and well laid out, with open lawns running down to the river. The university's Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts hosts public concerts and events throughout the year.

Hamilton's identity as a university town shapes the city considerably — there are about 12,000 students enrolled, and their presence sustains much of the cafe and bar scene around Victoria Street and Hood Street. If you are visiting during semester, there is a lively student atmosphere; in January and February, the city is noticeably quieter.
