Waitomo is about 80 km south of Hamilton, in the heart of the North Island's King Country region. By car, take Highway 3 south from Hamilton to Otorohanga, then follow the signs on State Highway 37 for the final 16 km to Waitomo village — the drive from Hamilton takes about an hour.
From Auckland (about 200 km north), the most direct route is via Hamilton on Highway 1 and then Highway 3. Several tour operators run day trips from Rotorua and Hamilton. Public transport is limited — Intercity coaches stop at Otorohanga, from where Waitomo Shuttles runs a connection service timed to coach arrivals.
