Waitomo's activities are almost entirely underground. The glowworm cave boat tour is the classic experience, but the area has several other cave systems offering more adventurous access — black-water rafting, abseiling, and guided spelunking. Above ground, the limestone karst landscape is interesting to walk through, and the Waitomo Caves Discovery Centre explains the geology and ecology of the cave systems.
