Getting There

New Plymouth has a small regional airport with direct flights to Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch operated by Air New Zealand. The city is not on the main North Island highway network — the Taranaki region sits on the western side of the island, separated from the main Auckland-Wellington corridor by the central plateau. This means most visitors drive or fly; bus services connect to Hamilton and Wellington but the journey is long.

By road from Auckland, the most direct route is via Hamilton and State Highway 3, taking around four to five hours depending on traffic. From Wellington, the drive via Palmerston North and Whanganui takes around four hours. InterCity buses run these routes.
