The most rewarding escape from Ōtaki is east into the Tararua Forest Park, where bush tracks follow the Ōtaki River from the Ōtaki Forks area about 18 kilometres up the road. Short walks into the foothills make an easy half-day, while the high ranges beyond are serious tramping country best left to well-prepared parties.
