Rangiātea Church

Rangiātea Church is the spiritual and historical heart of Ōtaki. The current building is a replica of the 1851 original, reconstructed after the fire of 1995 using traditional timber construction methods and Māori carving. The interior features carved tukutuku panels and kowhaiwhai rafters that recreate the character of the original.

The church remains an active Anglican congregation and is central to the Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga community. Visits are possible; respectful entry is appropriate. Rangiātea Road, Ōtaki.

A story
The original Rangiātea Church was built in 1851 at the direction of Te Rauparaha, the great Ngāti Toa chief who had converted to Christianity late in life. It was one of the finest examples of Māori church architecture in New Zealand — a building that blended European ecclesiastical form with Māori carving and craftsmanship. In 1995, an arsonist burned it to the ground. The replica completed in 2003 was built using traditional methods and is itself now considered a significant cultural achievement.
