Palmy has a small but lively bar and cafe scene driven by the student population. Cafe culture is strongest around George Street and the lanes off Broadway, with a clutch of small independent roasters serving good espresso. For an evening drink, George Street and Coleman Mall hold most of the city's bars, ranging from rugby-fan pubs to the more recent craft-beer-focused places. The Sprig and Fern chain has a Palmerston North branch on George Street that pours well-kept Nelson beers, and the Brewers Apprentice is a long-standing live music venue with a wide tap selection.
