Palmerston North's restaurant scene punches above its weight for a city of 90,000 — the student population from Massey and the agricultural wealth of the surrounding region between them support a wide range of cafes, gastropubs, and small ethnic restaurants. The strongest cluster is along George Street and the streets just off The Square: Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, modern New Zealand, and Italian are all well represented, with prices well below Wellington's. Saturday morning farmers' markets at The Square and at Hokowhitu showcase Manawatū produce — cheeses, lamb, free-range eggs, and the region's particularly good craft beers.
