Massey University's Turitea campus is the city's largest single institution and one of the largest university campuses in New Zealand. It occupies a 70-hectare site south of the Manawatū River, on land originally set aside as the Department of Agriculture's experimental farm — Massey's strengths in veterinary science, agriculture, and food science still trace back to those origins.
The campus is open to visitors, and a good walk takes you past the Sir Geoffrey Peren Building (one of the older brick teaching halls), the Wildbase wildlife hospital, and the still-working teaching farms with their flocks of sheep and herds of dairy cattle. The university bookshop and several student cafes are in the central plaza near the library. It is a 15-minute drive or a 30-minute bus ride from the city centre.
