The country around Queenstown rewards exploration. Arrowtown, a well-preserved gold-rush town just 20 minutes away, is compact, historic, and easy to walk — don't miss the restored Chinese Miners' Village from the 1860s gold rush. Wanaka, about an hour north, is quieter and feels less commercial, with its own lake and mountain scenery. Milford Sound, in Fiordland, is a longer drive (around 4 hours each way) but one of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes — genuinely worth the effort if you have the time.
