The Reefton School of Mines is a reminder that the gold rush was not only picks, pans, and luck. Quartz mining needed chemistry, surveying, assaying, and engineering, and Reefton had enough ambition to teach those skills locally. The building is one of the town's strongest heritage stops.
It is best seen as part of a walk through historic Reefton rather than as a standalone museum visit. Pair it with the old commercial buildings and the powerhouse story, and the town's boom years become much easier to picture.
