Victoria Forest Park

Large beech-forest park south of Reefton, with tramping tracks, rivers, and old mining country

Victoria Forest Park is the wild country behind Reefton: beech forest, rivers, old mining tracks, and hills that quickly feel more remote than the map suggests. It is not a single lookout or picnic stop, but a large backcountry park with walks ranging from short outings to serious tramps.

For a spare day, choose one of the shorter Reefton-area walks unless you are equipped for proper New Zealand tramping. The weather can shift quickly, and the longer routes deserve more respect than their distance from town might imply.
