Between Islands
Domestic flights are the quickest option. Lulutai Airlines (formerly Real Tonga) connects Tongatapu with Vava'u, Ha'apai, 'Eua, and the remote Niuas. Flight time to Vava'u is about an hour; to Ha'apai, around 45 minutes. Flights run most days but not Sundays, and cancellations and delays are common — never connect a domestic flight directly to an international departure without a generous buffer. Book ahead during whale season (July–October) when seats fill up.
Ferries are slower and more unpredictable. Tofa Ramsay and FISA both run services from Tongatapu to Ha'apai (roughly 13–14 hours) and Vava'u (around 18 hours) a couple of times a week. The MV Olovaha and MV Pulupaki are the most commonly used vessels. Conditions can be rough, especially in the wet season. Ferries to the Niuas run only about once a month and schedules shift frequently.
On Tongatapu
Taxis are the main way to get around the island — they don't use meters, so agree on a fare before you get in. Rental cars are available in Nuku'alofa and give you far more flexibility for exploring. Buses run from the market in central Nuku'alofa to various parts of the island for a few pa'anga; they're slow but cheap.
In Vava'u
Neiafu is compact and walkable. Boats are the main transport for reaching the outer islands and anchorages. Water taxis run between islands; many guesthouses and whale-watching operators can arrange transfers. Rental bikes and scooters are available in town.
In Ha'apai
Lifuka is the main island, with Pangai as its town. Distances are small enough to manage by bicycle or on foot. Boats connect the island chain; arrange these through your accommodation.
