Currency
The local currency is the Tongan Pa'anga (TOP), sometimes called the dollar locally. Notes come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 pa'anga denominations. Cash is essential — card payments are limited even in Nuku'alofa, and largely non-existent on outer islands. ATMs exist on Tongatapu and Vava'u; there are none in Ha'apai or on smaller islands. Withdraw what you need before leaving the main centres.
Hours and Sunday Closures
Sunday is strictly observed. Most shops, restaurants, and services close completely. Even swimming at public beaches is technically restricted. Plan accordingly: stock up on food and cash on Saturday if you're on an outer island.
On other days, government offices typically operate Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm. Shops in Nuku'alofa open around 8am and close by 5pm on weekdays, with shorter hours on Saturday.
Health
Medical facilities outside Nuku'alofa's Vaiola Hospital are very limited. For anything serious, medical evacuation to Fiji or New Zealand is the realistic option. Travel insurance that covers evacuation is not optional — get it before you leave home.
Tap water in Nuku'alofa is generally safe but many people drink bottled water to be safe. On outer islands, rainwater or tank water is the norm; confirm safety with your accommodation.
Communications
Mobile coverage (Digicel and Tonga Communications Corporation) is reasonable on Tongatapu and Vava'u, patchy on Ha'apai, and very limited on smaller islands. Local SIM cards are available cheaply at Nuku'alofa shops. International roaming is possible but expensive.
Wi-Fi is available at most guesthouses and some cafes in Nuku'alofa and Neiafu; speeds vary.
Safety
Tonga is generally safe. Petty theft can occur, particularly in Nuku'alofa at night. The main hazards are natural: cyclones (November to April), strong ocean currents, and the remote nature of outer islands, which makes self-reliance important.
Dress modestly away from beach areas, especially in villages and churches. Removing shoes before entering a home is customary.
Electricity
240V, 50Hz. Outlets use the Australian/New Zealand angled two-pin or three-pin plug (Type I). Adaptors for other plug types are useful to bring.
Time
Tonga is UTC+13, making it one of the first places in the world to see each new day. It does not observe daylight saving time.
