Sailing the Vava'u Group

The Vava'u Group's combination of protected anchorages, predictable trade winds, and closely spaced islands makes it one of the premier bareboat charter destinations in the Pacific. Distances between islands are short — most passages are under two hours — and the anchorages are sheltered enough that a novice skipper can handle most conditions. Dozens of undeveloped islands with beaches and snorkelling are within a day's sail of Neiafu.

Charter boats ranging from modest monohulls to catamarans can be hired from operators based in Neiafu harbour; experienced crew can be hired to accompany beginners. The usual circuit takes a week and covers 12 to 15 anchorages. Provisioning from Neiafu's market and small shops is adequate but not extensive; bringing specialty food from Tongatapu or beyond makes for better eating. The season runs roughly May to October when the trade winds are most reliable.
