Niulakita Reef

The fringing reef around Niulakita is one of the few coral systems in Tuvalu that sees almost no outside disturbance. There are no dive operators and no equipment rental — you will need to bring your own snorkel gear. Entry from the shore is possible in calm conditions; ask a local about safe access points, as the surge can be strong on the windward side.

A story
Unlike most Tuvaluan atolls, Niulakita has no enclosed lagoon — it is a raised coral island dropping steeply into deep ocean on all sides. The reef encircling the island is healthy and largely undisturbed by anchoring or fishing pressure from outside. Visibility in the water can exceed 30 metres. Turtles are regularly seen near the reef edge, and the drop-off on the southern side is particularly dramatic.
