Niulakita Village

The island has one settlement, a small community at the northern end. Arriving here as an outsider is a genuine event — visitors are rare enough that your presence will be noticed and, usually, warmly received. The village has a church, a small community building, and not much else. The appeal is the remoteness and the quiet.

A story
Niulakita's single settlement sits at the island's northern end, a cluster of houses and a small church surrounded by coconut palms. The entire population fits into a few dozen households. The community was resettled here in 1949 from the overcrowded atoll of Niutao, and many residents can trace their family history back to that original group. Daily life revolves around fishing, coconut gathering, and taro farming — the same rhythm it has held for generations.
