Lake Manu'a

Lake Manu'a is the larger of the two small brackish ponds in the interior of Niutao. It sits in a low depression in the centre of the island, ringed by pandanus and coconut palms, with the water slightly salty from underground seepage from the surrounding ocean. The lake supports a particular population of small fish that the villagers harvest at certain times of year.

There is no path around the lake; getting to the water's edge means pushing through low scrub from the road that connects Kulia and Teava. It is shaded, cool, and the kind of quiet place that is the antidote to the constant Pacific surf in your ears everywhere else on the island.
