Teava is the smaller of Niutao's two villages, on the eastern side of the island. The sand road from Kulia runs across the interior under the palms — twenty minutes' walk if you keep moving, longer if you accept the inevitable invitation to sit down on the way. Teava is quieter than Kulia, with a small church, a few dozen houses, and a beach that faces the open ocean rather than the lagoon side.
The reef on this side drops away particularly steeply, and the breakers in any kind of weather are spectacular. The villagers fish from the rocks at the southern end on calm days; if you join, take a hat and water and expect to be there for hours.
