Asau Catholic Church

The Catholic church in Asau is a low white-walled building near the centre of the village, modest in scale but well kept and one of the more prominent structures on the island. Catholics are a minority on Vaitupu as in the rest of Tuvalu — most of the population belongs to the Protestant Ekalesia Kelisiano Tuvalu — but the Catholic community here has been stable for generations.

The Protestant church a short walk away is larger and more architecturally striking, with its higher roof and wider open plan. Sunday services in both are open to respectful visitors; the singing is, as everywhere in the Pacific, the reason to be there.
