Loru Conservation Area

Community-managed primary rainforest with endemic birds and flying foxes

The Loru Conservation Area protects a tract of primary rainforest on the coast north of Luganville, managed jointly by local communities and conservation organisations. Walking trails lead through lowland forest where flying foxes roost in the canopy and green palm cockatoos — one of Vanuatu's most distinctive birds — move through the trees. Several other endemic bird species are found here that are difficult to see elsewhere on the island.

The area has kastom (traditional) significance to local communities. Guided walks are available through the village at the entrance, and visiting with a guide is both respectful and far more productive for wildlife spotting. This is one of the better options on the island for seeing Vanuatu's forest wildlife without a long overland journey.
