Espiritu Santo

Largest Vanuatu island, with rainforest mountains, blue holes, and World War II wreck-diving history

Espiritu Santo is the largest island in Vanuatu, a rugged, mountainous place covered in dense rainforest. The main town, Luganville, was a massive American military base during World War II — at its peak, over 100,000 troops were stationed here, and the remnants of that era are one of the island's main draws.

The most famous is the SS President Coolidge, a luxury liner converted into a troopship that sank off Luganville's shore in 1942 after hitting friendly mines. It is now one of the world's most accessible large wreck dives. Inland, the blue holes — freshwater springs of almost impossibly clear turquoise water — are scattered through the jungle, and Champagne Beach on the east coast is regularly cited as one of the South Pacific's finest.
