Matevulu Blue Hole

The largest and most famous of Santo's freshwater blue holes

The Matevulu Blue Hole is the largest and most famous of Espiritu Santo's blue holes — natural freshwater swimming pools fed by underground springs that emerge through the limestone bedrock. The water is a startling electric blue, clear enough to see the bottom at 10 metres without effort. Rope swings hang from the surrounding trees for those who want to make an entrance.

The drive from Luganville takes about 30 minutes on sealed road, making this one of the easier day trips on the island. A small admission fee is charged; the money goes to the local village that manages the site. Arrive early to have the place to yourself — cruise ship days can bring larger crowds.

A story
The vivid blue colour is not from depth but from the refraction of light through clear, mineral-rich freshwater flowing from underground springs. The temperature stays around 22°C year-round — noticeably cold compared to the tropical air, which makes swimming here a genuine pleasure rather than a lukewarm paddle.
