Tanna's coastline has some of the most striking black sand beaches in the Pacific, formed from volcanic material eroded from the island's basaltic rock and ash deposits. The dark sand against the clear blue water is unusually dramatic, particularly on sunny days when the contrast between the two is sharp.
Port Resolution, on the northeast coast near the volcano, is a sheltered bay with a black sand beach backed by coconut palms, and the water is warm and clear. The beach at Sulphur Bay, below the volcano, has a particularly volcanic atmosphere — hot springs seep into the sand at low tide, and the steam from Yasur is visible above the treeline. Snorkelling is possible at several points along the coast.
