The kastom (traditional) culture of Tanna is unusually strong compared to much of Vanuatu, which has seen significant Christianisation and westernisation elsewhere in the archipelago. Several villages on the island maintain traditional dress, practices, and belief systems, largely rejecting outside religious and cultural influence. Nagriamel and Yakel are among the villages that maintain traditional ways most visibly.
Visiting kastom villages requires a local guide and explicit permission — these are functioning communities, not tourist exhibits. What you will see, if welcomed, is a way of life that has changed remarkably little: men in nambas (penis sheaths), women in traditional grass skirts, and a community governed entirely by custom law. The contrast with most of the developed world is absolute.
