Early Christian Baptistery

The 6th-century baptistery is Butrint's most extraordinary individual monument. The circular building, some 14 metres in diameter, served the early Christian community of the city and was built within an earlier rectangular enclosure. Its floor is covered with one of the finest mosaic pavements in the Balkans — a vast circular composition of interlocking geometric and figural designs in polychrome stone.

The mosaic is now sheltered under a protective cover, which somewhat dims the impact but has slowed deterioration significantly. Even through the protective roof, the craftsmanship is staggering — the variety of pattern, the precision of cutting, and the sheer ambition of the composition make it clear that 6th-century Butrint was a place of real wealth and sophistication.

A story
The baptistery mosaic floor is considered the most complex of any late antique baptismal structure surviving in the Mediterranean. Its seven concentric bands of interlocking geometric patterns spiral toward a central font, incorporating animals, birds, and plant motifs in a riot of colour. It was buried under later structures for centuries, which is the main reason it survived intact.
