Church of Saint Mary

Elbasan's oldest church, Byzantine origins with surviving Ottoman-era frescoes

The oldest surviving church in Elbasan, with Byzantine-era origins, though the current building dates largely from the Ottoman period when it was permitted to remain as a functioning Orthodox church within the walls. It was used as a mosque for a period after the Ottoman conquest, then returned to Christian use. Inside, faded frescoes survive on the apse walls. The church still holds services and is open to respectful visitors outside service times.
