The Skanderbeg Memorial stands at the site traditionally identified as the burial place of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero. The old church of Saint Nicholas was later converted into a mosque, and the memorial now preserves the layered history of the site.
It is a short visit, but an important one. The League of Lezhe, formed in 1444, made the city central to Albania's story of resistance to Ottoman rule.
