Lezhe is a small northern Albanian city with more history than its size suggests. The ancient city of Lissus stood here, the League of Lezhe gathered Albanian nobles under Skanderbeg in 1444, and Skanderbeg was later buried in the old cathedral in the centre.
The visit is simple and strong. Climb to Lezhe Castle for the view over the Drin plain and Adriatic coast, then come down to the Skanderbeg Memorial in town. If you have more time, the coast and wetlands around Kune-Vain-Tale Lagoon add birdlife, beach air, and seafood to the day.
Lezhe works well as a stop between Tirana, Shkoder, and the coast at Shengjin. It is not polished, but the combination of national history, castle views, and nearby wetlands gives it a clear reason to be on the map.
