Eating Out

Përmet punches well above its weight for food. The local raki — distilled from plums rather than grapes — is worth trying as an aperitif or digestif. Restaurants in the town serve simple southern Albanian cooking: grilled lamb, fërgesë (a slow-cooked pepper and offal dish), and byrek (layered pastry with cheese or spinach). Several places along the Vjosa embankment offer outdoor seating with river views. The restaurants in the Lengarica canyon near the Benja baths are particularly good for trout, pulled from the river the same day.
