Zvernec Monastery

The Monastery of Zvërnec occupies a small wooded island in the Narta Lagoon, about 12 km north of Vlorë, reached by a rickety wooden causeway. The setting — water and pine forest, flamingos on the lagoon in spring, the distant mountains — is beautiful, and the monastery itself, a working Orthodox church, adds a human scale to an otherwise empty landscape.

The lagoon is part of a protected area and is one of the best spots in Albania for waterbirds. You can walk or drive to the car park at the edge of the lagoon and then cross the causeway on foot — it takes about five minutes and requires some care on the older planks. The lagoon shore near Nartë village is also pleasant for walking. Zvernec is easily combined with a visit to the Soda Forest coastal park nearby.

A story
The monastery sits on a small island in the Narta Lagoon, connected to the shore by an ancient causeway of stone and timber. It was founded in the 13th century and dedicated to the Holy Trinity. During the Communist period all religious activity was banned; the monks were expelled and the monastery fell into disrepair. Restoration began in the 1990s but is ongoing — part of the appeal is the sense of a place not yet polished for tourism.
