Practical Information

Currency: The euro is used, though Andorra is not an EU member. There are no exchange controls. ATMs are widely available throughout Andorra la Vella and the main villages. Credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere.

Language: Catalan is the official language and a genuine point of pride. Spanish and French are widely spoken in shops and hotels — most service workers speak at least two of the three. English is increasingly common in tourist areas but don't count on it in smaller villages.

Shopping and tax: Andorra's VAT (called IGI) is just 4.5%, compared to 20% in France and 21% in Spain. This makes electronics, cosmetics, alcohol, tobacco, and luxury goods noticeably cheaper. The main shopping strip runs along Avinguda Meritxell in Andorra la Vella and continues into Escaldes-Engordany. When leaving into Spain or France, customs allowances apply: up to 900 euros of goods per adult, plus 1.5 litres of spirits and 5 litres of wine.

Phones: The international dialling code is +376. Mobile coverage is good throughout the main valleys; the high mountain areas can drop out. Roaming charges from EU plans may apply since Andorra is not in the EU.

Health: No vaccinations are required. The standard of medical care is high. The main hospital is the Hospital Nostra Senyora de Meritxell in Escaldes-Engordany. EU health insurance cards (EHIC/GHIC) are accepted.

Safety: Andorra is one of the safest countries in Europe. Petty crime is rare. Mountain weather can change fast — take precautions on high trails.

Time: Central European Time (CET), UTC+1 in winter, UTC+2 in summer.
