Mikoyan Brothers Museum

The Mikoyan Brothers Museum in Alaverdi commemorates two brothers from the local Sanahin village who achieved extraordinary careers in the Soviet Union. Anastas Mikoyan became one of the most enduring figures of Soviet politics, serving in top leadership roles under Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev — a remarkable record of survival in a system that consumed most of its servants. His brother Artem Mikoyan co-founded the Mikoyan-Gurevich (MiG) aircraft design bureau, responsible for some of the most important military aircraft of the 20th century.

The museum is small and the collection largely consists of photographs, documents, and personal effects, but the backstory makes it worth a visit. That two brothers from a small Armenian town in the Caucasus reached such heights of Soviet power and military achievement is genuinely extraordinary. The museum is located in the Sanahin district; ask locally for directions.

A story
The two Mikoyan brothers from Sanahin — Anastas and Artem — rose to positions of remarkable power and fame in the Soviet state. Anastas served as a senior Soviet politician for decades, surviving every purge from Lenin to Khrushchev, earning the joke that he could walk from Stalin's time to Brezhnev's "without getting his feet wet." Artem co-designed the MiG fighter jet series, which shaped air warfare for half a century.
