Alaverdi itself is an industrial town without much to see, but it is the indispensable base for visiting the Debed Gorge monasteries. Sanahin Monastery and Haghpat Monastery, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are within easy reach — Sanahin is practically adjacent to the town, while Haghpat is a short drive or taxi ride away. The Sanahin Bridge, an 11th-century stone arch crossing the Debed, is right in town. The Mikoyan Brothers Museum is a quirky local attraction worth a quick visit.
