Echmiadzin is only twenty minutes by road from Yerevan, which makes it one of the easiest day trips in Armenia.
Marshrutka minibuses leave from the Kilikia bus station in Yerevan throughout the day, costing a few hundred dram. A taxi from the Yerevan centre is straightforward and inexpensive — agree the fare in advance or use a ride-hailing app like Yandex Go. Many visitors combine Echmiadzin with the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral, which sit on the same road about four kilometres east of town.
The closest airport, Zvartnots International, is even nearer than Yerevan — handy if you are arriving in the country and want to see the religious capital before pushing on.
