Mikoyan Brothers Museum

In the old school building near the monastery, this small museum celebrates Sanahin's most famous sons. Artem Mikoyan was the aircraft designer behind the legendary MiG fighter jets, and his older brother Anastas was a senior Soviet politician who navigated the dangerous waters of Stalinist politics with remarkable skill. Both were born here in the early 1900s when Sanahin was a remote Armenian village in the Russian Empire.

The collection includes photographs, personal effects, and models of MiG aircraft. A MiG-21 fighter sits outside the building. The enthusiastic guide, often a relative of the brothers, speaks Russian and Armenian but makes the story clear regardless of language barriers. Entry is by donation — give at least 500 AMD per person. The museum is a ten-minute walk from the monastery.

A story
Artem Mikoyan designed the MiG series of fighter jets — the 'Mi' in MiG stands for his surname. His older brother Anastas served as a top Soviet politician under both Stalin and Khrushchev, one of the very few to survive both regimes with his head attached.
