Surb Hovhannes Church

17th-century church in the lower part of town

Surb Hovhannes (St John) is the second of Meghri's three surviving Armenian churches, in the lower part of the old town near the bazaar. It was built in 1673 with thick masonry walls of cut tuff and the long horizontal proportions typical of southern Armenian churches of the period. The interior is plain — most decoration was lost during the Soviet years when the building was used as a warehouse — but a 17th-century carved altar stone and a series of weathered khachkars in the small cemetery remain.

The church was reconsecrated in the 1990s and now sees occasional services. The view from the small terrace outside takes in the lower town, the Aras valley, and the bare Iranian mountains on the far side of the river.
