Battle of Karakilisa Monument

Memorial to the 1918 battle that helped secure Armenia's brief first republic

The monument sits on a rise at the southern edge of the city and commemorates one of the foundational moments of modern Armenian statehood. The composition is typically Soviet-Armenian in scale — heavy basalt blocks, a defiant figure, plenty of negative space — but the view down over Vanadzor and the Pambak valley is the main reason to climb up here.

It is a short walk uphill from the centre, or a few hundred dram in a taxi. There is no interpretive signage in English, so if you want context, read up on the Caucasus Campaign of World War I before you go.

A story
In late May 1918, with the Russian army collapsing and Ottoman forces advancing into the Caucasus, a smaller Armenian volunteer force halted the Turkish 9th Army at Karakilisa — the old name for Vanadzor. The fighting was brutal, with bayonet charges and house-to-house combat, but the Armenian stand here, along with victories at Sardarabad and Bash Aparan in the same week, made possible the declaration of the First Republic of Armenia just days later.
