Dzoragyugh (Old Yerevan)

A small pocket of old Yerevan preserved on the slope down to the Hrazdan River gorge, in the Arabkir district north-west of the centre. The area was set aside in the 1970s as a sort of open-air museum of traditional Armenian urban houses, several of which were relocated here from elsewhere in the city. The Sergei Parajanov Museum is the best-known building.

The streets are quiet and the views down into the gorge, with its rusting Soviet-era cable car infrastructure, are unexpectedly dramatic. Combine a visit to Parajanov with a short walk through the surrounding lanes.
