Bad Gastein sits at the southern end of the Gasteinertal, around 90 kilometres south of Salzburg.
By train, the Gasteiner Bäderbahn runs up the valley from Schwarzach-St. Veit, where it connects to the main Salzburg–Vienna line and to the Tauernbahn heading south towards Villach. Direct trains from Salzburg take roughly 90 minutes; from Vienna, change at Schwarzach. The train station in Bad Gastein is in the centre of town.
By car, take the A10 Tauern Autobahn south from Salzburg and exit at Bischofshofen for the B167 valley road. In winter the road is usually clear but snow chains should be in the car.
