Gebhardsberg

Hill above Bregenz with castle ruins, a chapel, forest paths, and broad Lake Constance views.

Gebhardsberg is the quick climb that gives Bregenz its best landward perspective. Forest paths lead to the ruins of Hohenbregenz Castle, a chapel, and a terrace where Lake Constance, the Rhine valley, and the edge of the Alps open out below.

You can drive up, but walking from the centre makes the view feel earned. It is a good half-day counterpoint to the lakeshore and festival stage, especially in clear weather when the geography of three countries seems to gather around the lake.
