Roman Theatre (Brigantium)

The remains of a Roman theatre were excavated in the Oberstadt quarter and are among the most significant Roman finds in Vorarlberg. The theatre dates from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, when Brigantium was an important administrative and trade centre on the Rhine frontier. Excavations have revealed the cavea (the seating area cut into the hillside) and elements of the stage building.

The site is visible in situ, integrated into the fabric of the old town. The Vorarlberg Museum holds the best of the portable finds — coins, ceramics, architectural fragments — and its Roman section gives important context to what you see at the theatre site itself. The combination of the excavated remains and the museum collection offers a clear picture of Roman Bregenz.

A story
Bregenz was the Roman town of Brigantium, and the theatre discovered here is one of the northernmost Roman theatres in the empire. It could seat around 3,000 people — a significant structure for a frontier settlement on Lake Constance, suggesting Brigantium was more prosperous and culturally active than its remote location might imply.
