Hauptplatz

The Hauptplatz is the central square of Graz — a broad, slightly irregular space that serves as the hub of the old town. The Erzherzog Johann Fountain at its centre is the meeting point everyone uses; the archduke stands pointing toward his beloved Styrian Alps, a statue commissioned after his death in 1859. Around the square, painted Baroque and Renaissance façades in every shade of yellow and ochre give the place a warmth that survives even in winter.

The Rathaus (town hall) occupies one side, rebuilt in the late 19th century in a heavy Historicist style that feels slightly out of place against its older neighbours. More interesting are the medieval arcades on the surrounding streets, particularly Sporgasse and Herrengasse, which lead north and south from the square. The farmers' market runs here on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings, with Styrian produce — pumpkin, wine, cheese, and dried mushrooms — spilling from the stalls.
