Mausoleum of Ferdinand II

Early Baroque mausoleum commissioned by Ferdinand II for himself in 1614

A fine early Baroque mausoleum begun in 1614 — when its intended occupant was a healthy 36-year-old with no plans to die soon. Ferdinand II commissioned it himself, which gives it an oddly personal quality. The architecture is dense with symbolic detail and the interior is surprisingly rich for what amounts to a planned tomb. Located near the Domkirche, slightly uphill from the main tourist flow.

Stempfergasse. Open Mon–Thu and Sat, 11am–noon and 2–3pm.
