The baroque parish church of St. Achatius stands at the centre of Kössen, its onion dome visible from most of the valley floor. The current building dates largely from the 18th century, with a bright interior decorated in the exuberant rural baroque style common to Tyrolean mountain villages — gilded altars, painted ceilings, and a general sense that the congregation wanted to give God an appropriately impressive house.
The churchyard is quiet and well-tended, and the church square is the natural meeting point of village life. Early morning or evening is the best time to visit — midday can see tour groups passing through on their way between Kitzbühel and the German border.
